Didymos Organic Cotton Wrap Baby Carriers Production

Posted by: bebecannelle on: 10 April 2008

Didymos has been a family-run business since the 70s. It has been set up in rural Germany by Erika Hoffmann, mother of twins (Didymos = twin in Ancient Greek).

Erika used a cotton wrap baby carrier to carry her twin daughters, together when they were tiny and then one at a time. Babywearing meant she had her hands free! Erika wouldn’t have been able to start her own sling-making business without her Didymos wrap. Today, both her daughters, Tina and Anna, are part of the Didymos company.

Erika has always paid particular attention to the manufacturing process to ensure the cotton is certified organic, does not contain any harmful chemicals and is fairly traded without child labour.

Didymos always refused to produce their wraps in so-called “cheap labour-countries”, like India.Didymos has a strong ethical policy and is commited to the protection of our environment.

The problem with Indian cotton is that cotton wool pests love the Indian climate and are slowly becoming resistant to insecticides. Today Indian cotton farmers use strong pesticides with no regard to their own health. The pesticides contain toxins that have already been banned in Europe. A lot of workers processing the cotton wool are dying at a young age due to the chemical evaporations of those pesticides. You can learn more about cotton pesticides killing Indian farmers here.

Didymos uses quality organic cotton which is free from poisonous chemicals like insecticides or defoliants. These factors are regularly tested by Didymos and this is why Didymos wraps have been recommended by the highly critical consumer magazine Öko-Test.

Didymos is known today as a reference wrap baby carrier. Whether you have a premature infant who needs skin to skin contact, a baby with allergies who needs toxin-free fabric against her skin or if you are en eco-responsible customer, there is a Didymos wrap for you.
